Anton Goryunov writes from Moscow: You really have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at all the fuss that has been made around those topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge.
The funniest thing of all is the indignation in the British media about the French edition of celeb magazine Closer publishing the snaps and others following suit. As if British hacks have no idea that banging on about this whole non-story, in all its glorious detail, only contributes to attracting even more attention to the whole affair. I especially love the way newspapers in the UK claim that foreign organs of print have published the photos of topless Katie to sell more copy – while putting their own indignant articles about it on their front pages, obviously not in the least interested in copy sales themselves.
Come on, this is really hilarious!
And how about that line that St James’ Place has taken, feeding the press with stories about Prince William being devastated by the intrusion into his private life and the danger of the media starting to hound Kate just like it did Princes Diana? Hacks, it has to be said, were actually giving the Cambridges a pretty easy ride, obediently producing tame reports about the movements of the couple and even calling Kate a glamour and fashion icon, both of which she never was and never will be. And all comparisons between Kate and Diana that have been made in the press are simply ridiculous.
And then there’s the legal challenge that St James’ Palace has launched against the French magazine. Who the hell suggested to the Cambridges that it would be the best way of handling this situation? It will only cause more people to start following this non-story. It would have been a much better to play the whole affair down and get Katie to stick to going topless only in the privacy of her bedroom. In this world of 24-hour news the whole incident would have died down in no time at all. Especially as the photos, if you want my honest opinion, are not that exciting really.
The problem with the Cambridges and the young Windsors generally is that they have chosen to become celebrities and behave like ones. They pick the wrong sort of people to mix with and hang out in places like fancy nightclubs and eateries that are closely monitored by hacks. They get drunk, dance the night away and then stumble out in the early hours looking haggard. They want to be treated like royalty but behave like peasants, if you want it straight. What on earth was Prince William thinking when he married Kate Middleton? That she would make a great queen? He lived with her in sin for eight years, for God’s sake! And when he had the good sense to dump her for a while, she started going to all the nightclubs imaginable, escorted by young men, to get him jealous and come back to her. Which he did.
Royal it wasn’t. Just like it wasn’t in the least bit royal to turn that wedding into some freak show for the masses, with Pippa Middleton coming dressed in a nightgown and showing of her bony backside to the world. Not to mention the list of guests that included some serious undesirables in it.
But the really embarrassing thing about the latest royal incident is that the media chose to turn it into some huge story when we have a near collapse of the world economy that is being ripped apart by banks with the assistance of governments and the third world war brewing in the Middle East. Europe going down in flames of the debt crisis anyone? Naah, Katie with her tits out is a much bigger story.
Is it just the stupidity of editors or are the money men telling hacks to cover anything but their asset stripping ways?
Weird times we’re living in.
